Free Door

Cheers, Good morning!

My friend and I just made a beautiful pot of fresh, french press coffee and it's grey and breezy outside. This combination and mood is serving us well because we are cozy and working on brainstorming. We have been searching Pinterest and home magazines for the past year for dream house inspiration and decor, which we enjoy very much and pretty much consider a hobby by now. Pinterest has been particularly helpful in our endeavor. Or has it? It leads us down a dangerous path of desire.
Designing our dream house began a year or two ago. We made a sketch and discussed the construction and layout. Now we have been slowly collecting things at flea markets, and home furnishing stores that we find affordable and irresistible.

Last winter, we were eyeing up this door that was out in someone's yard. The sign said it was free so we both had that urge. The one where you see something free so you automatically take it even if you have no use for it, but in this case, we saw the use. It was a nice, sturdy, well built door. It was painted white and had a large glass window in it. We passed by it 3 days in a row, saying the same thing everyday- "we should take that door." As the days passed we decided we needed to move on this because, good grief, what if someone else took it?? The door was ours in our minds already so it was time to take action.  Here is how it went down: We were driving home from dinner on a cold winter night, in my small, red, KIA rio, approaching the house with the free door, and suddenly the acquisition of this door became a now or never situation. We went from 35 mph to 0 as we pulled off the road. We zipped up our coats and prepared to make our moves. It was below 0 degrees on this night. The kind of weather that the news stations warn you about. So we got out of the car, glove-less, opened the trunk, and ran towards the door. It was heavy, and FROZEN to the ground. We managed to lift it and carry it to the car, our hands sticking to the paint, and our eyes so watery we could barely see. There was a moment of doubt as we struggled to carry it to the trunk. We were freezing  and shouting to each other, "Should we do this?? I'm SO COLD!" and it was so heavy... but we prevailed. We were not about to leave it for someone else. We shoved the door in, as best as we could, but couldn't close the trunk, thank goodness we didn't have far to drive. We jumped in the car and slowly and steadily made our way up the road. Chloe had to hold on to the corner of the door, which was wedged above her head, so that it wouldn't slip out of the back of the car. Every bump and hole was a threat. The cold air whistling in through the back of the car was chilling and wild. We finally parked and made it to the driveway and then came the unloading- another struggle, as we hurriedly took it from the back of the trunk to the garage. Woo. We got the door. We were FREEZING, but we got the door.

We are very proud of this door and it now sits in the basement, awaiting its glory-filled day of installment in our dream house. It's in consideration for the highly prized position of Front Door to the dream house. It's adorable and very sentimental already. Every time we look at it, we smile and nod. We've acquired other items as well- a hand-painted night stand, a mirror, side tables, dishes, glassware, pillows, blankets, and decor of all sorts. Our plan is to have the most beautiful, aesthetically pleasing house on the planet, with very happy and fun inhabitants. I believe we are close to our dream, and will be finding the perfect place soon!

Cheers ta dreams,
Cassie
